Medical Science, Science, Sport

Why did you choose your courses?

I did the Lower Sixth at St Bede’s doing A Levels, but didn’t do well in the exams, so I knew that I would be better suited to BTECs. I’ve known that I want to be a Paramedic for a long time, having been a member of St John Ambulance, so the Extended Diploma in Medical Science provided the perfect grounding for this career.

What does the Medical Science course involve?

It concentrates on the medical aspects of each science. For example, in Biology, we’ve explored how the body works as well as diseases and infections. In Chemistry we’ve learnt about how medicines are made and in Physics, how medical equipment works. We’ve specialist teachers for each subject and I’ve learnt so much from them.

Have you applied to go to university?

I had help from the College Careers Department, preparing for my university interviews, which were quite intense. I’ve had offers from Hertfordshire and Anglia Ruskin Universities for their three year BSc courses in Paramedic Science.

Are you involved with other activities at College?

I was proud to be appointed Sports Officer for the Students’ Union this year and worked hard to get more girls involved in sport on the campus. I’m really keen on sport; I’ve competed nationally in trampolining and played rugby for Chipstead.

What do you enjoy about being part of the St John’s Ambulance?

I’m fully first-aid trained. I love helping at local events and volunteering in the community. I’ve mastered essential lifesaving skills as well as learnt to work in a team and under pressure.
